How Coral Springs Got Its Name

Coral Springs in Florida earned its name due to the abundance of coral reefs that are present in the area’s underground aquifer.  The city’s founders, James S. Hunt and Nathan H. Brummer, were drilling a well in the area in the 1960s when they discovered the coral formations.  Well, the pioneers were so impressed with the natural artistry of the coral, they decided to name the city after it.

According to the Coral Springs Museum of Art, the formal name of the city was chosen by a group of civic officials back in 1963.  The official name “Coral Springs” was chosen to reflect the city’s natural coral and to honor the extraordinary geological features that set it apart from other Florida cities.

Today, Coral Springs is a booming community.  Its natural beauty and unique geological features continue to be an important part of the city’s identity and culture.
